2011 WG Jonathan Perry tore up the competition at the GASO College Station Event.
Sometimes, a guy just has to scratch his head and say I just don't get it. All around lesser guys get D-1 offers. How can a player who was 3 times an All Region Player, and All State as a senior at a 4A school in the talent rich State of Texas not be a lock for MULTIPLE D-1 offers?
CHARACTER? CHECK
ATHLETICISM? CHECK
SKILL SET? CHECK
DEFENDS? CHECK
ACADEMICS? CHECK
Perry had plenty of D-1 interest, but timing/coaching changes etc kept schools like the Citadel, Eastern Kentucky, Stephen F Austin, Army, Liberty, Houston Baptist and others from pulling the trigger. One thing about Perry though, he's a young man of FAITH. As soon as the school season ended with his Kerrville Tivy team he went to work transforming his body. Countless hours in the weight room, and then a commitment to agility and quickness sport specific training with my partner T.J. Garza of Speed Killz http://www.speedkillzperiod.com/ has made Perry a bigger, faster, stronger version of himself.
Perry and Papa Rick headed on a trip to the East Coast last month and came back with a plan and a commitment. Perry decided that the prestigious Fork Union Prep School in Virginia would be his next step. Over the years, Fork Union has churned out D-1 players and just importantly has a rigorous academic and military curriculum.
We fully expect Perry to receive multiple D-1 offers in the July viewing period, but don't expect him to jump. As I said to him on Sunday after his dominating weekend, can you imagine your body and confidence level a year from now? As I said earlier Perry believes God has a plan for him.
At 6'4" 200 lbs Perry can handle the ball adequately to run an offense, shoots it well enough to line up at the two, and is strong enough to battle bigger three/four men in the post. Whoever does finally land this young man, will have gotten a WINNER. This past weekend he averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, 4 assists & 3 blocks per game.
