Austin Westlake 70 Alief Elsik 63
This time last season Austin Westlake was in the Championship Final of the Texas Invitational, losing in the final to Houston Bellaire in the last minute of that game. This year's edition of Westlake kids are using the event as an opportunity to build chemistry, confidence and to develop their youngsters. Looks like they're going to win a few games along the way too. They picked up their second straight win, this time over Alief Elsik.
2012 R.J. Rowan 25 points
2012 Drew Wikelius 17 points 10 rebounds
2013 PG Will Morse 13 points
Duncanville 59 Austin Westlake 51
Senior G Darius Wilson of Duncanville did what he wanted, dropping 21 on the Chaps. 2012 G R.J. Rowan is quickly taking on a leadership role and led Westlake in scoring again with 18 points and 9 rebounds. Sophomore Will Morse had 18 points in the loss. Westlake plays in the 3rd place game of the Silver Division tomorrow vs. Flower Mound.
San Antonio Central Catholic 87 San Antonio Brennan 59
The Sinsei (Central's Romy Vela) & The Protege' ( Brennan's Tommy Hines) reunited today to lock horns on the sidelines after their days together on that San Antonio Jay State Championship club. This game did not belong to the coaches. nor the players as the zebras took charge from the onset.
This one became a free throw shoot a thon with both teams in the bonus less than 4 minutes into the game. Frankly, it was a first half with no flow. Central Catholic adjusted to the tight officiating and the younger Brennan team did not.
2011 SG Cole Martinez of Central Catholic (shown below with Texas D1)
A close game was broken wide open in the 3rd quarter as Central Catholic was almost perfect from the field. Brennan had no answer for Senior Tommy Berry who dropped 11 in the stanza followed by 10 from 2011 G Cole Martinez. Despite their superior size, CC's strength was the perimeter shot and the transition game. Brennan didn't stop either of those as Central ran wild and hit triple after triple in the 2nd half, most of them only mildly contested. Brennan has no seniors and it showed in their depth.
Leading Scorers:
Central Catholic
Cole Martinez 26 points 5 assists
Tommy Berry 16 points
San Antonio Brennan
2012 G Marcus Smith 18 points
2013 G Johnny Azzinaro 13 points
Austin Akins 61 Georgetown 59
This one was a barn burner, with Akins eking out the win. Malcolm Canada (Central Arkansas) had 20 & Yolonzo Moore (Hartford) had 14 points. 2012 PG Micxhael Hardge had 17 for Georgetown.
Yolonzo Moore (l) scored 14 for Akins & Michael Hardge (r) had 17 for Georgetown.
Temple 33 Garland Naaman Forest 30
As one of the Temple coaches said, "DEFENSE LIVES IN TEMPLE".
Round Rock McNeil 67 Del Valle 64
Karim York had 33 in the loss, while 2011 G Blair Williams led a balanced McNeil attack with 15.
Victoria West 41 Kerrville Tivy 35
Tivy will struggle this year with youngsters in the lineup but the good news for Coach Brian Young is he has several good youngsters including 2013 W Rowdy Winters and 2014 Matt Perry. Perry will be a 4 year varsity player as was his older brother, All State G Jonathan Perry who is now at Fork Union Prep (VA).
Desoto 66 San Antonio Taft 64
Spring Dekaney 61 San Antonio Taft 57
I don't have details but it bodes well for Taft this season. With a seasoned backcourt they will be a tough matchup in the San Antonio area although their lack of size could bite them in some matchups.
Four Dallas area teams make up the Final 4 of the top bracket at the McDonald's Texas Invitational. Mansfield Summit, Richardson Berkner, Desoto & North Crowley all have advanced.
Humble 51 Converse Judson 50
Pearland 34 Converse Judson 33
Not too many times you see Coach Mike Wacker's teams lose 4 game sin a row. In fact, that can darn near equal a season's worth of losses for the Rockets. As well coached a team as the Cen Tex offers, Judson usually wins thos eclose games. Stay tuned to see how they progress in this young season.
Katy Cinco Ranch 64 San Antonio Warren 61
San Antonio Clark 35 Pearland 34
San Antonio Clark 57 Humble 49
Clark will play Fort Bend Marshall tomorrow in the championship game of the Bronze Bracket.
Smithson Valley 68 Pasadena Memorial 59
Dickinson 59 Smithson Valley 41
Smithson Valley got off the "donut" with their win over Pasadena Memorial.
Harker Heights 97 Pflugerville Hendrickson 88
Coach Celnique Bobbitt could have one of his best crew's in a long time. They were in a shootout last night, and 2010 W Royce O'Neale had the biggest gun at a knife fight, with 39 points. Jalen Washington had 28 for Hendrickson.
Killeen 85 Pflugerville Connally 46
The Runnin' Roos hopped all over Connally behind TaShawn Thomas' 24 points.
Lake Travis 43 Round Rock 34
Seniors Chris Dash & Billy Sherakas led the way with 14 points each.
Leander 54 Asutin Anderson 51
Senior Mark Nwakamma (l) had 17 in the win, while a much improved Anderson squad got 12 from 2013 G Rasmus Bach. Bach (r) is an up and comer. His parents were both Olympians for Australia in another sport, so he's got athletic bloodlines and a great work ethic.
Pflugerville 60 Killeen Ellison 56
Deon Mitchell (Northern Iowa) had 25 points as Pflugerville won it in the 4th quarter. 2011 W Jaleel Williams had 13 for Ellison.
Mitchell (l) inking with Northern Iowa & Jaleel Williams of Killeen Ellison (r)
Austin St. Michael's 58 Austin St. Anthony's 53
The Catholic's went all the way to San Antonio to duke it out. Jake Kocher had 29 & 2011 W Adam Whitlock had 9 as the Crusaders notched the win..
San Antonio Churchill 85 South San 69
Churchill's 2011 6'6" Clark Lammert had 25 points, including three from beyond the arc to lead the Chargers. 2012 6'9" Connor Lammert continues to rest from a broken vertebrae which has sidelined him since June.
On the Gridiron
Big props to 2 Texas D1 Ambassadors as SG Dylan Cox (Army basketball signee) caught a big TD pass in Cedar Park's 28-23 win over Smithson Valley & to PG Josiah Monroe (Texas-San Antonio football verbal) who rushed for 164 yards from his QB spot, finding the end zone 3 times. As I've said before, Monroe would prefer to play basketball. D1's you have a chance to snag him to play roundball before the football signing period.
Hoopers/football players WR Dylan Cox of Cedar Park (l) & QB Josiah Monroe of Bastrop
